I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. I didn’t want it to end. I mean I did so I could gush about it but I didn’t because it was so good.

It took me a little bit to understand WHY there was the animosity between the two groups of people-the Elsyrians and the Lagrimari (basically the light skinned people and the dark skinned people respectively). But once I figured it out (like 2 chapters before it was outright stated) EVERYTHING started to make SO MUCH SENSE.

Let me back up some first. This is set in an alternative 1920s style world. It didn’t feel like that. It felt like a fantasy planet. Which was a VERY good thing. Also, DO YOU SEE THAT BEAUTIFUL FREAKING COVER? IT’S GORGEOUS. Not only that, but our main character resembles that cover. Dark skinned, not straight hair, it’s GLORIOUS.

I would have given it another star but the book was a little heavy on the romance for my taste. I did enjoy how L. Penelope handled her characters, I always fall for the independent woman. The book parallels race relations in our world... with light skinned people on one side who despise and revile a darker skinned people on the other side. The whole thing gets resolved in the end after we go through some uprising twists and turns. I would recommend this book to others and I look forward to reading the author's next book..
It's hard to trust book reviews these days... Some books just are not worth reading.

L. Penelope does NOT fall in that category!

Her characters are strong, fluid, and even though they live in a completely different world from ours, they are completely relatable. Her writing is remarkable and so profound, I could barely contain my excitement at coming across this fabulous gem!

She has the most amazingly beautiful cover and I am a cover snob so after reading the description, that cemented my resolve to try a sample.

It was worth it.

The sample drew me in so quickly and I knew once it ended I would be purchasing the book.

Which I did. Again it was worth it.

I didn't quite know if I should select first or second person. I chose second because the author created this wonderful world through the book's star heroine. I enjoy fantasy worlds, aka Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and more, and have always been enchanted at how an author can create those worlds in painstaking detail! That is what L. Penelope has done. The book was a welcome respite from day to day living. While I don't particularly look for romantic novels, I found the combination exciting and adding to some chapters that were page turners for me. I particularly liked that the world she created was different - not a 'knock off' or copycat of anything that I had previously seen or read. The introduction of the steam punk feel was well done and added a different, shall I say vibe, to this fantasy romance novel. If you enjoy magic, fantasy worlds and exercising the limits of your own imagination, I think you will enjoy this book. I read it in a week (and that was because I had other things going on too). I can't wait for the next one! Enjoy!
The only reason this book didn't get 4 complete stars is because I felt it had recognizable errors and the main characters back stories were vague. I would have liked the author to have shared more about the magic, I felt as a reader we only got a glimpse, which is disheartening because this is the first book. The territories could have been fleshed out more, making the reader feel more attached to the citizens that occupy each region. I think the wrap up was too HEA for this book, but the intrigue/cliffhanger of the epilogue was very intoxicating. Personally,I really wish the chapters were displayed differently, it felt often times it just went on and stumbled inconsistently.

I loved the two main characters, both male and female showed vulnerability and strength. It was a believable match and a well built relationship. I loved how the author stayed true to the characters and they didn't fall apart once a relationship was blooming. I really enjoyed reading a protagonist storyline of color without the over use of sex. This was very refreshing! I want more!

I would definitely recommend this book for fantasy and romance book lovers!
L. Penelope creates characters that stay with you even after you close the book. I would set the book down to go to sleep and either dream about or continue thinking about Jasminda and Prince Jack. I was also in awe of the world she created and can't wait to find out more about the origins of the Singers and the Silents.

This book also has a message that is very timely as well as timeless and that's the judgement of others based on skin color and perceived inherent "wickedness" because of that skincolor. It was never preachy, nor bashed you over the head with this message, but was great subtext for this unique and entertaining paranormal romance.

I can't wait to read the sequel, Whispers of Shadow and Flame, which debuts October 30th and I hope we learn more about Jasminda's fathers, brothers, Grandmother, and Aunt Vanesse.
