This was a relatively entertaining read. During the time of King John (the king we all love to hate, along with Richard III), sweet young Beatrice, a daydreaming heroine with feelings of inferiority, sets out to save her family from what she sees as imminent danger, by traveling to London to bring her father home. She is accompanied by lifelong friend Tom, the son of the family nanny, and by her wannabe suitor, stranger-to-the-area Garrett.It's quite the road trip with lots of adventures and the addition of two traveling companions, down on their luck and rescued by sweet, caring, innocent Bea. Mysterious Garrett, we learn early on, has a secret agenda. He's seeking revenge on Bea's father for a long-ago wrong to his mother and himself by planning to seduce and dump Bea. So as they are thrown together on this trip, will there be romance and redemption for him? Or will he continue to be the villain and will Tom be Bea's hero? That's for me to know and for you to enjoy finding out.
Hegger is a new-to-me author. I checked out her author's page on Amazon and see that this is not her first book; it's one of five she has written. She has an interesting background, born British and raised in South Africa, and b/c of this I had expected better grammar and spelling in her book. We Yanks are usually more careless in that regard, but Hegger's book had several places that needed better editing. Also her writing is weak when describing action and fight scenes, but the more tender and more humorous moments are well done. (I won't bother to mention anachronisms of speech b/c, really, where do you not find them in recently-written HRs?)
This isn't in the list of best HRs I've read but it interested me enough to preorder the next book, about her older married sister.

What starts out as a tale about revenge and retribution turns into a story of love and redemption.
Sweet Beatrice is known as the ordinary and plain one in her family. With three failed betroths, Beatrice is convinced that no man will ever find her as attractive or desirable as her older, happily married sister. So when handsome and witty Garrett shows interest in Bea she is flattered and delighted by his intentions.
However, things are not always what they seem. Garrett has an ulterior motive for his attention to Beatrice and as soon as he can put his plan into action he will make her father pay dearly. But unbeknownst to Garrett, there is another man with his eye on Beatrice and her family.
As this story unfolds, we watch as sweet Beatrice captures the heart and loyalty of those around her. Over the course of their journey together, Garrett realizes that his feelings for Beatrice outweigh his need for revenge. But when the truth of his actions are discovered will Beatrice still feel the same about him?
It’s hard to not fall in love with the characters in this story. There is Bea, who seems to enjoy pushing the limits at every chance, and who attracts trouble wherever she goes. Her sidekicks on her road trip to London are Garrett, whose plans for revenge against Bea’s father are put on hold as gets to know Bea, and her best friend, Tom. They pick up a couple more interesting characters along the way.
Each character is so distinct and most of them are quite lovable, though I confess Tom is my favorite. He tries so hard to keep his dear friend, Bea, out of trouble. He finds out a lot about himself and what he’s really made of during this trip.
Garrett also learns a lot about himself, and has some definite changes in his views on many levels, during this quest. And Bea is just Bea throughout the whole journey, but it is the being of herself that draws others to her.
They all have much to learn as they journey to London together.
This is an interesting story, a bit different, and quite entertaining. Love the adventures and unusual encounters along the way. All the characters are wonderful. A delightful read. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I really had a hard time staying with this story. I didn't care for the H at all, until the very end. When that happens you struggle to stay focus, when you don't care for one of the character's. The h, was too innocent, and acted like someone years younger. The secondary male character, was also, hard to care for. Having said all that, the ending is worth it. Granted, you will have to give up the rules of this time period, because the ending will have you saying, THAT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ALLOWED! But, this is fiction, so I suspended my notion of what would have happened, and let the story go.
We get descriptive lovemaking outside of marriage, an off the page rape (not to our h), but still be warned. Violence, some surprises and twists, that I didn't see coming. We get HEA and no cliffhanger.
I read The Bride Gift by this author and loved that story, and this one fell short for me. (ljb)
I really didn't find this story sweet at all. Firstly it is riddled with errors, which usually only get on my nerves when I'm not fully involved in the story (as was the case here). The author switches words e.g. stroke instead of stoke, ring instead of wring and she misspells e.g Cane instead of Cain (and Abel). She also has the dubious honour of using a swear word that I don't believe I've ever read in a Regency before and hope never to read again. Aside from that the word 'wh**e) appears on nearly every page and got on my nerves. I realise I sound like a prude and maybe I am but I read romance for escapism not for crudity. The story itself was also fairly weak in my opinion, the middle bit where they were travelling to London really dragged on.
+++Spoilers+++
Finally the ending requires a leap of imagination since I doubt it would ever have happened in those times. After the H took the h's innocence and he was the illegitimate son of a traitor, I'm pretty sure the h's family would have taken his life in those days instead of happily overlooking all of that and allowing him to marry the h.
